when i studied abroad in japan, i spent a year attending classes and living in a shared dorm with like 40 students from around the world and 40-some japanese student ‘tutors’. we shared in some wonderful memories that will last in our respective minds for a lifetime.
at some point though, the program ended and we had to say goodbye. saying 80+ heartfelt, '“don’t know when i’m going to see you again” goodbyes is traumatic, and that’s no exaggeration.
but to see some of these people in japan, the usa, and other countries around the world 1, 5, 10, and 20+ years later is such an amazing feeling. the feeling of hugging someone hello after years of not seeing them and conversing as if you’d never been apart is one of the most rewarding experiences a human being can have.
